Rutland launches specialist nurse service to help dementia patients in the county

Rutland in the East Midlands has appointed its first dementia- specialist Admiral nurse thanks to a partnership between Dementia UK, the charity that oversees the service nationally, and Rutland County Council.

Angela Moore has been appointed as the county's first Admiral Nurse. Her role will be to provide support to families facing the most complex cases of dementia in the community, working alongside existing services to improve the wellbeing of carers as well as the person with dementia.

Admiral Nurses provide the specialist dementia support that families need. When things get challenging or difficult, these nurses work alongside people with dementia, their families and carers, giving them one-to-one support, expert guidance and practical solutions.

Rutland is only the second local authority in the whole of the UK to have a dedicated Admiral Nurse among its social care services.

Before starting her role at Rutland County Council, Angela was an Admiral Nurse at Hinchingbrooke Hospital supporting patients with dementia and their families. She has experience of working with hospital staff to improve dementia care in wards.

Part of her role at Rutland County Council will be an extension of this. She will be encouraging best practice and education amongst health and social care professionals throughout the community.

It’s a privilege to be Rutland’s first Admiral Nurse and to provide advice and support to families facing the most complex dementia needs. With its rural setting it can be a challenge for people in Rutland to access dementia support services and we want to make this easier. I will also be taking on an advisory role for GPs, care homes and other health and social care providers in the area, and I’m looking forward to seeing the impact we can make together”.
