Greater Manchester's Health and Social Care devolution team, Dementia United, have teamed up with the Alzheimer's Society to bring a Community Roadshow to various destinations in Manchester over the next couple of weeks.

The initiative is being supported by Richard Hawley who currently plays Johnny Connor in Coronation Street, and whose father suffered from dementia before his death.

I have seen the effects of dementia first hand through my father’s illness and it not only has a huge impact on the person diagnosed but also the rest of the family too. It’s important that families affected by dementia get the care and support they need. That’s why I’d urge anyone worried about themselves or a loved one to pop in to the Alzheimer’s Society roadshow on its tour of Greater Manchester and find out how Alzheimer’s Society can make a difference.

The Greater Manchester Community Roadshow will be calling at the following places from 10am to 4pm on the dates specified:

Manchester Royal Infirmary - 19th and 20th January
Salford Royal - 21st and 22nd
Trafford General Hospital - February 2nd
The Esplanande, Rochdale - March 8th
Mersey Square, Stockport - March 11th

The Roadshow will help raise awareness, provide vital information and advice on dementia, direct people to essential, local services and help bring people concerned about their memory one step closer to achieving a diagnosis.

Our community roadshow goes hand in hand with Dementia United to support the estimated 29,739 people with dementia in Greater Manchester to live, full, active and meaningful lives. At Manchester Royal Infirmary the team will provide essential support, information and advice about dementia. They will signpost people with dementia and their carers to essential local services, and bring people concerned about their memory, or that of a loved one, a step closer to achieving a diagnosis.

Dementia United have the ambitious aim of making Manchester the best place in the world for dementia care. Dementia has been recognised as a devolution priority within the area and the hope is that future initiatives, including this Community Roadshow will help bring together people from across all communities, and provide them with specialist knowledge and expertise to bring about significantly improved outcomes for those living with dementia and their carers.

Dementia United's 5 year programme was launched last November and is tasked with transforming the care people living with dementia and their carers receive, and by so doing, reduce pressure on the health and social care system. The hope is that the project will be able to provide a blueprint for excellence in dementia care that can then be rolled out across the country.
