National Museums Liverpool have been offering highly effective dementia awareness training to health and social care professionals since 2012. The programme has proved so successful that, last year, the training was opened up to family carers, friends and community volunteers.
This Autumn the programme is to be rolled out to several partner museums around the country. The half day workshops which are funded by the Department of Health are completely free of charge, and are open to anyone whose life has been touched by dementia.
Each Family carers dementia awareness training workshop consists of:
- character-based video stories to help participants understand the experience of living with dementia and being a carer,
- trials of the award-winning My House of Memories app, which the museum is encouraging people to download to use on mobile devices at home
- and dementia-friendly activities to show how museums and cultural venues can be a resource in helping to unlock memories, improve communication and understanding, and enrich the lives of those living with dementia.
"We set up our first workshops for family carers in Liverpool last year, to provide them with new ideas and perspectives on caring for their loved ones" explains Carol Rogers, National Museums Liverpool’s executive director of education and visitors.
"Person-centred care is at the heart of our workshops, and acknowledges that an individual's personal history and memory is of huge importance.
"We know that dementia is an emotional subject to talk about, particularly if it affects a person you love. When you're caring for someone on a daily basis, it can be hard to see past the every day tasks."
"We have received some incredible feedback from previous workshops, and we hope people will take the opportunity to join us so we can steer them in a positive direction, and help improve the lives of those they care for who are living with dementia."
The next dates for dementia awareness training workshops for family carers are:
2nd November 2016 - New Walk Museum and Art Gallery, Leicester
14th November 2016 - Salford Museum and Art Gallery
25th November 2016 - Museum of Liverpool
1st December 2016 - British Museum, London
On each of these days there will be a morning workshop from 9:30am to 12:30pm and an afternoon workshop from 1:30 to 4:30pm.
