Van Dyke School year 11 pupil Megan Pickering takes the opportunity to volunteer at Elm Lodge Care Home as part of her Duke of Edinburgh Award.
A huge part of the award is participating in a volunteering role, something Megan was only too happy to participate in at Elm Lodge.
It is Megan’s dream to one day follow a career path of medicine, with hopes of being a cardiovascular surgeon Megan paid particular interest in taking a leading role in activities designed for physical and mental wellbeing.
Talia Greaves Activities Coordinator at Elm Lodge Care Home says: “It is so lovely to see our younger generation taking a genuine interest in what we do. Leading the ball play armchair exercises sessions provided Megan with hands on experience and insight in to how we creatively work to maintain physical and mental wellbeing in the people we care for and support. I think she enjoyed it just as much as everyone else did, we can’t thank Megan enough for taking a genuine interest and being a dedicated member of the team.”
Megan Pickering says: “I love to learn new skills, especially ones that will help me follow my chosen career path. Working with Elm Lodge was very rewarding, I like seeing all the happy faces and being part of taking care of our elderly and their mental health and well-being. I have definitely made friends I look forward to visiting in the future.”
